Default Hearing A KNOCKING from the rear side!

Hi Guys,

I have been hearing a "knocking" sound in the right rear area of my S80 (above the wheel) when moving on small humps on slow speeds.

A friend heard the sound and checked the car from below and he advised the reason were the bushings shown in the photos. Have anyone faced this before and changing the bushings made the sound disappear? or could it be the anti roll bar drop links?

Also what's the name of these bushings if I want to buy them online for a DIY fix (if possible)?

Thanks in advance.

They look to be the trailing arm bushes. Common failure on these cars. Can be done at home but easier on a lift. Requires a tool to press them in and out. Plenty of videos online showing replacement.

Would they cause this knocking sound or it can be something else?

Since these bushes are a FoMoCo problem, you might consider finding the equivalent FoMoCo parts which will be the same but cheaper as they are used on the Mondeo.

+1 I also recommend Hallmark in Stockport. These guys know their stuff.

Those pictures look like the trailing arm bushes. Once replaced, you need an alignment. Hallmark have alignment equipment.

I got mine done a few years ago and it cost around £300 including the alignment. Prices may have changed since then, but its not a cheap fix. Its a few hundred, just so you know.

I'd suggest you book it in with them, explain the symptoms and let them do the investigating. It could be the trailing arm bushes, but it could be many other things as Simmy said.

There's also another independent Volvo Specialist called Trevor Burgess in Hyde, just off the M67. The address is;

Unit 1/Sandpits Business Park/Mottram Rd,
Hyde,
SK14 3AR
Tel: 0161 368 9911

Open Monday-Friday (8am-5pm).

I haven't used Trevor Burgess personally, but they also get good reviews.
