Default Xc70 towbar electric upgrade

New caravan means I need to upgrade my current toebars electrics from 7pin to a 13 pin.

Is this DIY friendly or best to get someone to do it? I'm a qualified electrician but not sure what's involved with any coding or adjusting Canbus etc

It isn't a hard job to do, but have you considered using an adapter to get from 7-pin to 13pin?

Volvo never used the 7 pin system.. a good time to get the genuine volvo 13 pin kit with control module at a reasonable price.

Volvo used both the 7-pin and the 4-pin systems, depending on time and market.
When I bought my XC 70 MY 2012, it was the first MY here in Sweden where they just installed 13-pin. Before that, you could choose. But then you got 13 and an adapter 13->7.

Using an adapter 7->13 I wouldn't recommend, since you can't get all the functions out there then.
The TRM (now assuming your car does have Volvo's own TRailer Module installed for the electric connector) has all the functions of the 13-pin system. They are just not connected all of them if the car has a 7-pin socket.

The only thing missing in the TRM is constant 12 V feed, which must be supplied from REM by a separate wire and fuse.
