Default Best XC 90 AM power steering pump

Looking to buy a good quality after market power steering pump for my XC 90 when over next month, there seems to be a bigger choice in the UK than Aus. Any pointers much appreciated
Thanks

I would much rather fit a second hand genuine pump than a after market one....

Thanks for your comment. We could talk about the pro’s and con’s re after market, second hand or original for ever. I don’t know what your breakers yards are like in the UK but over here you never really know what kind of mileage the part you buy has already done so very risky. I would prefer new original but have heard that some of the European made after market stuff is as good as original but I could be wrong.

So you say 2nd hand is risky and after market is also risky

There’s only one option left: get genuine Volvo new part. Zero risk.

If you live in a rural part of Australia where journey's are 100's of miles, climate is very hostile, mobile reception is a lottery and help is hours away - the above is really the only option.

I would still rather fit a second hand pump from a car that had done 150,000 miles than a new after market one. My more recent experience with after market and "OEM" parts is just about anything with "sacrificial" components (i.e. those that wear away like bearings) last only a fraction of the life of the genuine Volvo parts or those made by OEM manufacturers to Volvo spec.

A really good example is water pumps on the D5 engine, Volvo spec ones are intended to last the life of the engine, most people on here (which are still few in numbers) with water pump failures are where an aftermarket part has been fitted as part of a cambelt change and it's lasted 10-20k miles.

Hi Swiss, after market is risky here in Aus, there really is no competition, just the odd rough Chinese knock off,s nothing substantial. The selection you seem to have in Europe or the US is huge by comparison. Since I am in Europe next month I thought I might make the most out of being there and save the freight costs, I really am trying to cut a few corners now before I get there by getting some pointers from the guys in the know on the ground, surely some of those aftermarket sites stand out from the general crowd when it comes to quality, not all Chinese rubbish is it ? An example of what I am talking about is recently I had my windscreen washer pump go on me, I found out that an identical new Ford one was a fraction of the new Volvo price yet made by the same factory as made the Volvo one, it was identical, it just had Ford printed on it. The funny thing was, the old one was also a Ford one from when the car was new !?. Perhaps if I find out who manufactures the Volvo steering pumps, (could even be Ford lol) I might be able to do the same.

I found company here who rebuild the pumps - my experience was front seal leaking which many other Volvo owners have had, seems this pump has a weak seal but otherwise at around 100,000 miles was working fine; surely you can find a company over there that can rebuild them?

Hi Tannaton, my original Volvo pump is only at 160,000 K’s (not miles) and rooted so how would it be if I was given a pump of similar K’s from a dismantlers, what good would that be ?
