Default Stalling XC90

We have a '55 plate XC90....and it has just developed an alarming problem.....it looses power all of a sudden, power steering goes completely and if we slow down whilst in drive the engine just stalls when the speed gets below around 10mph.....on the motorway it's not such a massive deal safety wise (as long as we're in the slow lane).....pull over with no power steering, come to a stop....on twisty country roads it's not the same, of course it's very dangerous....there is a red-triangle warning which reads something like "Engine System Service Required"

After waiting for a minute (possibly less) the car can be re-started with no apparent problem......no message is recorded and everything seems fine....however, after running for between 10 minutes and 30 minutes it happens again......

There is only one out-of-the-ordinary thing which has happened over the past couple of weeks.....I accidentally put some petrol into the tank, this was drained out by an AA contracted company on the forecourt and I did not start the engine, the tank was then brimmed with diesel....the first occurrance of the problem was more than a week after the incorrect fuel was added so I don't think it is related.

Any thoughts anyone?

Assuming it is a diesel the first thing to do is fit a new fuel filter , then suspect a faulty fuel pump in the tank .
but the stored fault codes will give a clue , so best get them read at a dealer .

Thanks very much for the reply....it is booked in for Monday to have the fault code read, we did suspect either the filter or a pump but wanted to have someone else (un-prompted) to say the same thing....it's a bit scary when it happens on a windy country road, luckily it has not happened when our caravan has been hitched up!!!

Default Follow up.....not good

OK...so the XC90 was taken to a specialist who we have used for servicing and have proven themselves excellent, they also said "fuel filter", then proceded to check the fault codes.....fuel filter was changed and all was fine....drove the car the 25 miles home, no hiccups.......then we had to drive to the airport to catch a holiday flight......an hour of motorway driving using cruise control mostly at around 70 to 80 mph....no trouble, until it was time to turn off onto the airport road.....as soon as I backed off the throttle the engine speed just decreased to stall, it didn't help that there was a police car on my tail!!!.....had to put on the hazards, into park, keys out, keys back in, start up, hazards off and then get going again....nightmare.....then at the last roundabout before the airport it struck again!!!!.....we called the specialist from the airport and told them what had happened.....so now that we are back we have to take it back in again.....what on earth is causing this??????.....maybe the next step is the fuel pump?????....it is just so sporadic that's the thing.......not every drive.....not necessarily when the car is hot, or cold......on either a short or a long drive.......help!!!!!....has anyone had these symptoms????

Default Xc90 intermittent stalling of engine

Hello,

I have a 2007 XC 90 and also experiencing intermittent stalling issues. No alarms on panel either.
April 2019 - Driving on a quiet suburban street. Engine stalls and loose all power. Dash has no alarms. Tried to restart - ran for 50mtrs and then stalled again. Call AA man. He turned up - plugged in his machine and says injector fault. Starts again without problem. Drive to the nearest AA recommended garage. After 2 weeks get a call to say wiring loom damaged and need to repair and this was due to wires rubbing due to vacuum mounts. Replace mounts and repair section of wiring GBP 320 later all great!!!!
June - Wife driving to work and stalls again. AA man turns up and says codes indicate low fuel pressure and swirl plate motor alarms.
Take it independent Volvo specialist garage. They report No.2 nd No.5 injector sensor fault and they repaired terminals and siad faults clear and good to go.
July 2019. Wife again driving to work and stalled. Took it back to independent Volvo specialists. It bought up three main trigger codes. No.2 and No.5 injector. Swirl plate (do not want to fix until I know if the car is a right-off due to stalling issue) and transmission fault. Volvo technicials says one of the potential causes of this alarm is low fuel pressure/clogged fuel filter. They checked the filter and report that it was really bad condition/dirty and believe this could be the problem (they claimed this filter was replaced at last service 2 years ago).
So now I am hoping this has solved the problem. The above maybe of help to others and also someone may have experienced similar problems and found root cause.

Cheers
