Ideally, the entire cables need replaced because they get damaged internally - can look at the place where the cable enters the drum from behind - the cable must have a small round seal here which cracks and fails after years, then water gets inside the cable and damages it.

Fortunately volvo have always used the best rubbers going right back to the 140 series from 1967 when they first brought out this system , The rubbers do not perish . the 440 in the 90's had a problem with the handbrake cable boot falling off however .
The number of handbrake cables i changed on XC90 in the last 15 years i can count on one hand , most were in the first 2 years before they modified the pedal . biggest problem is no one uses the parking brake , which is illegal , therefore the surface of the drum rusts , the rust particles act like ball bearings hence no friction .
