Steering: - Hub assembly???

My garage advised me that the threads were damaged in my hub assembly, that the steering tie rod connects to.
I ordered a second hand part online, with the exact same part number, but the lower ball joints mounting is a different size to the original.
I would have assumed that all items with the identical part number would be exactly the same.
Any ideas how to solve this issue, other than buying brand new from the dealer?

What's the actual problem and which threads in the hub assembly are you talking about exactly?

The threads in the casting, that the track rod end bolts on to.
On the right hand side of the attached photo.

Thats not the volvo part number it is just a factory casting number ..

There are no threads where the track rod end bolts to . you probably mean where the bottom ball joint is held with 2 screws ...
This is further evidence the garage has cocked it up . They have tried to pull the new ball joint in with the screws alone and it is not surprising they have stripped the threads ,, the ball joint must be pressed in with the volvo tools then the bolts tightened ...

The joint at the RHS of the photo is the lower ball joint, which fits into the lower suspension arm (wishbone), not the track rod end.
Volvo changed from aluminium suspension arms in early models to steel, certainly by 2007, and with it the size of the ball joint taper. It's possible you've been sent a hub assembly from a later car. If your original lower ball joint is OK you may be able to remove the joint from the replacement hub and reuse the old. There are various youtube videos showing how to remove the ball joint, but be careful when pressing the 'new' one in; you need to press on the flat plate and not the ball joint itself. I've used a 2" bsp pipe fitting large enough to fit over the rubber boot without damaging it and long enough to come past the end of the of the ball joint stem. Acces to a vice helps too. Check that the splines for the driveshaft are the same as your original as well, first.

The garage wasn't working on this.
The mechanic just noticed it looked loose, while it was up on the ramp. Working on the rear flexi brake pipes.

You are talking about the lower ball joint which fits onto the lower arm ?? It must be down to the previous person who worked on that hub then ..

As for the hub swap, you will need one from either V70 or S60 01-07. Maybe you got one from an S80 or XC70 ? - those may not be the same

Also the donor car has to have the same transmission as yours - either auto or manual, and same engine - either turbo or non turbo. All these because the splines inside the hub bearing will be different

Sorry oragex but you are wrong.

There is no difference in splines for the hub end.
There is a difference in spline size only in the differential end for auto/manual transmission.
There's no difference in drivehsafts for engine type besides N/A petrols that came with a lighter driveshafts but have same spline sizes per transmission.

And the front spindles are same for all S60, S80, V70 and XC70 P2 cars.
