Default Gear Knob change on 1.6 Petrol Manual

How can I remove the gear knob on a 2002 1.6 Petrol manual? Reverse is: pull up then left forward. I figured out that I can remove the top silver part but bottom one is causing me a headache.

Hi CypS40,

You have to cut it down. First remove the top part(gear indicator). Just wiggle it upwards, you can try to insert a flathead screwdriver underneath and push it upwards, under that there will 3 or 4 (don't remember) plastic pieces(white rectangles), remove them. Keep the gear indicator and the plastic parts, you will need these later.

After you removed the gear indicator you will only see the knob. It has two layers, the outer is a soft rubber one, this one is melting down with age and you can trim it with a sharp knife to the core. The core is a very hard plastic, I used a rotary Dremel to cut it. Cut it from top to bottom, there is a spring under the core, be careful, do not damage the spring nor the gear lever, the sound of Dremel will change as soon as you hit the metal this will indicate that you are cutting a bit too deep.

After you cut it down use a hammer to attach the new know on the leaver, be careful, do not hit it very hard because you can damage the gear linkage.

It is a very easy task, just get a Dremel or a tool similar to this.

Also, only use the original Volvo gearknob, because as far as know only this one fits. You can buy only the bottom part, without the gear indicator and plastic parts. The serial number for this is: 30865426

hello, this work is very difficult. it is not screwed the track. You gotta do this. ford gear knob. then you'll drive the old gear knob with pincers beautifully. and te thread will open the new thread.

Look at the images.

Hello guys,

How did you fix this in the end I am in the same situation the melted part completely removed, no idea on how to proceed from here.

And another question have someone tried with this spare part:
https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...lever/1051664/

Or do you have any other recommendations?

-edit-
I found this thread in the forums: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=202962 just in case it can be useful to someone... I still need to try it by myself

Thank you in advance!
