...which means that at some time in the car's life the door lock or ignition lock was changed, as the key normally fits both locks.

If the key only fits the ignition (I'm assuming that you did start and drive the car previously) and not the door, then this confirms it.

Do you have a 2nd key?
Does it fit the door or the ignition?

At any rate you should replace the lock on the item where the key does not work... otherwise you run the risk of being stuck again.

These cars don't have a traditional key, it's just a chunk of plastic that turns in the ignition. The emergency key blade is removable from the actual key so could have been mixed up with another at some point.

The original owner of my car delivered it with a single key/fob and blade. Second key/fob location unknown to him. I definitely wanted a second option and ordered a second fob from Volvo at their outrageous price. The additional (absurd) cost for a second blade I dismissed and use a blank blade with no cuts. Just to use as a place holder and to put on a key ring. The next buyer will be so informed.

It never ceases to amaze me how many second hand cars come with only one key, what do people do with them?? When I bought my latest volvo in July I viewed 4 cars, only one had two keys 🙄

My last drive, a 1996 BMW 540i, came with everything. Books, keys, options, paperwork, the lot.

My current drive, Volvo XC90, came with everything and more. Books, paperwork, options, keys, and addons.

Some people look after stuff, and they are the ones to buy from.

I have seen people on ebay who will cut the blade from the vin number.
