Default Brake Lights

Folks,

My 03 XC90 D5 has just given the following message on the dash "CHECK BRAKE LIGHTS". Neither of the main, traditional lights come on with brake application, but the high level light does. Bulbs OK and fuses all OK.

Any ideas?

I would check out the stop light relay in the rear electronic module behind the flap in the left rear side ..

Thanks for the tip - do you happen to know which relay is which (my handbook doesn't detail the relays). I tried swapping them all around, but still I had no brake lights.

To close - in case anyone else has the same issue - it was in fact just the relay. Tricky to get to mind you - when you open the fuse/relay access panel on the side of the boot, you only have easy access to the left hand bank of relays (these were the ones I first swapped around with no luck). The brake light relay is on the right hand side of the panel, hidden behind the side wall trim. Luckily, I am fairly small and was able to squeeze my hand/forearm in to make the change (I did first try to remove the trim, but found no easy way)

So, job done. Thanks for the help.

I just had the same problem on my03 XC90. Thank for pointing out the solution. I had spoken to the dealer and they acted dumbfounded. Since fuses and bulbs were all good and the tailgate top brake light was working it would seem this should be a clearly identifiable problem.

In looking at replacing the relay, I don't know how you reached it with your hand.

For others with this problem who may need access to the rear relay panel, I did find a pdf which shows how to remove the XC90 rear cargo side panel which covers the rear relay panel. It's included in the instructions for installing the tow bar wiring socket. Those instructions can be found here:

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/TowB...7-4PinXC90.pdf

Again thanks to the original posters for having identified the solution to my problem.
