Default Radio problem

Anyone had this problem? Radio suddenly loses power and then comes back on after a few seconds. doesn't seem to have a pattern to it, can be stationary, driving straight or on bends. Convinced its not a loose connection.
The car is an 04 model d5 auto, with satnav.
Its already been in for a 'download'. Not cured though. It can do it 4 times in half an hour or not at all for days. Any help would be much appreciated.

Default re radio problem

Hi, my XC90 started with this fault and started to generate many others, remotes not working and locked out of the car, airbag warnings, Lots of popped fuses ect. After many trips to the dealer they twigged the windscreen was leaking and going into the power management system behind the steering wheel. Three visits later and lots of things changed hopefully all is fixed. This took about three months to progress from radio faults.

Hi Kev,

Do you have a subwoofer on your car? My '02 SE has the upgraded radio with satnav and phone. A couple of times the radio and phone wouldn't switch on during a three years period, next time I started the car it was fine.

3 weeks out of warranty the radio went off taking satnav, phone and parking sensors with it. Took the dealer 2 days to figure out it was a failed subwoofer that caused the problem. There was only one replacement in the country and it took nearly a week to get it. Car was away for 10 days in total.

Total bill was nearly £1000 but Volvo paid 80% thankfully.

Make sure you mention it to your dealer so it's on record. It helps if/when it finally goes down. Please note that Volvo can/will not do anything about it until the unit finally dies.

These units are hard to diagnose as it's all fibre optic cables and not wires connecting things together.

Hope it dies within warranty!

Your XC90 does not have a "radio" as such. The sound system is made up of various modules located around the car and are all linked together by fibre optic's. They are connected in series and the fibre optics create a loop.

If a module was to develop a fault then the loop would be interupted and the whole audio system would stop functioning.

My advice would be to take your car to a dealer. Hopefully there will be diagnostics trouble codes logged in the system that should guide the technician to the location of the fault. It could be a software issue as each module has its own software and there are upgrades that can be carried out.
