Could still be the master cylinder which has stopped leaking for now so yes, keep a vigilant eye and if drops again suddenly with no visible leaks replace it.

Can I just check we're not talking about a manual gearbox here?
It's the same reservoir for clutch and brake fluid.
If it is, this is a certainty to be the SLAVE cylinder on top of the gearbox. If anyone has had the under tray off, this is where all your fluid will be - if not its surprising how much it'll hold before it drips on the floor as it has an absorbent lining.

If it's an auto, disregard the above :-)

Cheers
Ian.

I had this exact same fault in my V50 and it was a actually the Concentric slave cylinder at fault, the clutch also began to not return the pedal back up so all of the symptoms were symptomatic of clutch failure, all replaced and fixed and I’m now £1k lighter sadly 😭

The fluid level in the resevoir is low so it’s not going to be the level sensor.

The indie has had a good look but can’t find anything, and even the 4 year old/40000m front brake discs look fine (rears changed 2 years ago).

Any ideas why fluid levels are dropping so quickly? There is no record of a fluid change in the last 6 years so maybe this is the issue?

Car is 2006 D5 163hp auto.

Thank you

As stated car is auto, also this post goes back to 2019 so the op has probably sorted it!!
Very annoying when people don't say how they've gone on......

The pads may well be fine, but as they wear out (still fine - still plenty of life) the fluid level will drop naturally. That is normal.

If you top the fluid up, or have topped the fluid up then the leve should now remain until you replace the pads (where up on you may need to remove fluid).

If however you have topped the fluid up and the leve reduces again then you have an unsafe issue that needs urgent rectification.

Has the level simply dropped, or has the level been refilled and then dropped again?

Haven’t logged in for ages and here I am on the front page

So, no problem was ever found, and no remedial action was ever taken, but the brake fluid I bought to carry around with me has never been opened.

Funnily enough, I also lost a load of coolant a while back. Topped up and took it to my indy, and no problem found, and no reoccurrence since.

Can only assume that after 207k the car has learned how to heal itself.
