Default climate control compatability

so whilst i still have no heat in the car im looking down another avenue, the thermal resistor behind the little grille, i do think its broken but cannot be sure

watching some videos on removing the climate control unit some mention removing the pen holder? dont have one there is no gap between tunnel console and centre console to remove such panelling.

ill keep digging on how to do this.

but the question is this

is there a difference between these two (except for the price) mine is a 2005 d5

Facelift V70 doesn't have the pen holder

To remove the CCM you need to put the lever into the 'D position' then disconnect the battery before you unclip the connector plug to prevent the SRS light illuminating once connected again.

Once the lever is in the 'D position and battery disconnected pull up the gear lever cover at the rear (yellow in pic below) and pull towards rear of car (white in pic below) to allow front of cover to clear the lower edge of CCM, there are 4 clips that hold the cover to the lever control module, they can be pushed in and the cover completely removed to give more/better access. Remove the two Torx screws at bottom edge of CCM then it is ready to carefully be removed from the car

It's not difficult to solder a new thermistor into the CCM, I used these Click

I could be the small fan behind the resistor is clogged up with fluff. You can't poke about through the small grill in front of the resister - as you'll probably end up breaking the thermistor, as it's very fragile. Once you have removed the Climate Control Unit, you'll see there's a plastic piece which houses the fan. Remove the housing and clear out any dust - that may be your problem.

You can test to see if the fan is working BEFORE removing anything by starting the car, put the heating on and hold a small piece of tissue (loo roll works) in front of the little grill. If the fan is working, you'll see the paper getting drawn on to the grill

Also - if you have VIDA try re-calibrating the CCM before you resort to taking it out.

Before you strip the panel out, try gently vacuuming the air inlet grill in the panel, a narrow tube like a plastic ballpoint body is ideal; use that on the end of a conventional vacuum cleaner extension tube, you can make a reasonable seal with a plastic bag.
Whatever you do, do not try to pick out the fluff using a needle or pin as you are likely to damage the very thin wire legs of the thermistor.
Wen soldering the legs of a replacement thermistor back on to the board be sure to use a heat sink, a crock clip or small binder clip is ideal. It is all too easy to damage the thermistor's glass bead.

at the moment still using a cigarette car heater as i need to build up the balls to get the car apart plus with it coming up to xmas there will be a lot of driving.

there was fluff in there but i am getting one of them air blaster things from amazon today, better than an air can apparently to give it a clear out.

do suspect its been jabbed before by a cocktail stick though the previous owner said he tried to clean it.

i have got some replacement resistors and a soldering gun at the ready

Did you try holding a bit of tissue paper in front of the small grille? If the fan is working then it will suck the paper onto the grille.

Don't 'blow' through the grille to clear it - you'll just end up forcing the fluff further in. Better to vacuum it out, carefully with not too much suction.

I can't help wondering whether the thermistor is the cause of your problem. If you haven't already, things to check are:

1. Are both heater pipes that go through the bulkhead hot? If not then the heater matrix is blocked

2. Does that A/C work - ie is it blowing colder than the ambient temperature? If ye, then the thermistor is working ok

3. Have you tried re-calibrating the Climate control unit? The blend flaps might be set in the wrong position, therefore not letting warm air into the cabin. You need VIDA to do this

ok so the heater matrix is fine the mechanic flushed it the pipework is warm to the touch when the engine is warm, i did have a faulty thermostat which has been swapped

as for the paper tissue test, no i havent actually..

looking at it i could be needing a new fan maybe as well? the motorised aircan thing has arrived to blow out any dust without the use of cocktail sticks or any other such probing devices.

at worst i need a replacement ccm which are appearing quite often on ebay so its not the end of the world.

ive read i need vida to reset it but ive no access to one unless someone lives in south east wales/gloucester/hereford that has it?
