Exhaust question .........
I have a "G" reg 1990 facelift 740 with Lamdasond .... On all my previous RWD Volvos they have had a Jetex full system fitted by a previous owner . I cannot get hold of the owner now as over time I have lost his email address .
I have done a search on here regarding fitting a Jetex system but im worried about the cat if removed will throw up a light on the dash . The CAT on mine is starting to rattle a little .... and also im wondering if by fitting a Jetex system will improve power a little . Not that it's going to be a land speed record winner , but would be nice to improve it a little . The car is only the 2.0i manual gearbox . |

Hi,
For the UK your car must have a Cat for 1992 cars onwards. You could fit a system above with no cat so long as your emissions pass for the MOT then you are Ok. The sensor for your emissions is actually fitted before the cat so a cats presence or absence will not make any difference to the readings! However, if the elements of your cat are breaking up then they may be causing a blockage in your exhaust system and that could affect the cars running. Des. . . ;0

Whats peoples experience with removing cats and passing the emission test ?
I know that testers are allowed to fiddle things slightly (within the test rules) to get some cars through by increaring the revs and warming the car up more etc. Can a well maintained car pass the test without the cat fitted ? |

Depends on the car, some cars will pass the sniffer test fine without a cat, and it's perfectly legal to remove the cat on any car first used in 1992 or before. My G-reg 240 never had a cat from the factory and passed emissions fine.

I have always wondered. My car was built in 94 so it needs a cat and must pass the idle and fast idle test, at least as far as I know.
There shouldn't really be any unburnt fuel as the Lamda sensor should pick this up. I will have to have a proper read up on it. The exhaust is pretty awful on my car and I don't really want the expence of buying a new cat if there is any way round fitting it. For most of the time I don't think cats do a lot. It's only when they get really hot they work properly anyway. Last edited by Steve940estate; Dec 27th, 2010 at 16:37. |
