Default Brake Dust

This is the first car I have owned where the brake dust is more pronounced on the rear wheels rather than the front.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Graham.

Yes it is normal , the rear brakes are doing a lot more work than they used to ..especially if you are a light braker . Heavy braking loads the front more to the level they have been for many years .

Thanks for this Clan.

Yes I am a light braker, it is a point of honour for me not to have to touch the brake pedal by anticipating and adjusting speed as necessary.

Am I right in thinking that the AWD system is very similar to the XTrail?

Graham.

My Nissan Qashqai is wearing its rear pads out faster than the front. Oddly the rear disks are also corroding rather badly. I reckon that the rear disks are made of monkey-metal. Rears will be worn out by 25,000 miles and front by 30,000. This contrasts with my CRV which had front changed at 48,000 and rear pads at 53,000.
Audi Q7 pads lasted near 50,000 miles, while tyres only lasted an average of 12,000 miles a set of four, compared with CRV at 25,000 a set.

I wonder what the 20" tyres will do on the XC90?

Back on topic. Having only done 1000 miles as yet its too soon for me to draw any conclusion about the XC90 other than brake dust is terrible on it. Dust must mean pad wear. It could be that as the discs are polished, pads will settle down to wear less and therefore the dust will lessen with time on a per mile basis. I'm not holding my breath though. It could be that the excellent Volvo brakes are partly down to softer pads and softer disc metal leading to more friction with which to retard the car. The Audi was much less dirty than this though and so are my two other current cars. None are driven particularly hard.
I found that Ferodo brake pads are less dusty than original equipment on the Honda, so when the time comes it might be worth researching alternatives for Volvo.

My XC90 pads and discs lasted 75k. They all had to be replaced at the same time.

My new V40 does seem to be producing less brake dust than the old one for some reason. It does have a different wheel type.

My last XC70 had 32000 miles on it and the pads still had plenty of meat on them also the discs were fine too. I towed a heavy caravan with it but I also like to ease off the speed rather than like some ,who fly up to junctions and slam the anchors on at the last second.
