So thus I concluded.

I will admit to feeling slightly cheated, however. I'd assumed two drivers were in there, so that two AC signals could be derived monaurally from a stereo source (L+ and R- , R+ and L-) as is common in subwoofer electronics. If this only had one driver, how did it manage this without unballencing the amplifier?

What a con!! I always wondered why the rear set up sounded a bit naff, even though it sort of looks impressive !
I think i may now find a way to fit a pair 7 inch kenwood speakers in the rear, that have been in my garage for a while ?

This is one of the best guides I've read so far! How not to do something so you don't have to muck it up!

Drove to IKEA, parked up opposite another 357 Terra Grey V40 2003! Tempted to leave my number to swap body panels when one car dies :-) Photo attached

My Catalytic converter became loose in it's box a few months back, so whilst in the UK I bouight another (one piece with the front pipe) from Ze Vater Lande, via EBay, £96.

Quite an easy swap when you can beat the crap out of it to remove from the recently fitted middle pipe. 3 Lambda sensors and guess what....one electrical connector didn't come out the hole but the cable end did! Swapped over the sensors, coppaslipped the 6 bolt flange and found some copper nuts rescued from an ASTRA exhaust manifold I'd binned recently, better than the rusty steel ones.

Took the drivers seat out to fish out the cable connector, refitted. Start up and run, no leaks and no dash errors.

Happy chappie!

Coming up... Having given up with the second sub idea; How to make a total hash of fitting a cupboard there instead where none was originally fitted in the factory. This, ahem, might be very fiddly.

Replaced the wiggly rubber strap that tethers the fuel cap to the car, after the hot glue repair job failed - very impressed with the replacement part, the seller says it's an aftermarket part, but looked 100% identical to the original, even down to the marks from the moulding process.

Default MOT Pass :))))

Today it passed its MOT with no advisories.
The C02 and HC have been climbing for the last three years. Last year they were just underneath the max. 1 month ago I did a liqui moly flush that definitely did remove some small granular sized bits of carbon !! The C02 and HC have now more than halved and the MPG is slightly higher. Coincidence or has the carbon perhaps come from the rings ?

As part of my overhaul of the entire backside of our beloved V40, I got into wiring the towbar. Not tested it properly yet, but I think it's gonna work.

I had a module lying around, which has half a dozen relays inside. The idea is that the car's wiring is sensed, and then the relays operate the trailer lights from a common live. I've not fitted that bit yet, need to run a decent cable the length of the car. I'll do that when I get around to fitting the USB door sockets, which is another ongoing project.

Meanwhile, the rear chassis components I'm keeping are all now a spanking gloss red. Well, it's what I had lying around. It was bought to paint the garage door and front porch - but neither of those things ever happened. The underside of the body shell is all painted with a combination of red oxide primer, underseal, and in a few places PVA glue - anything to try to defeat the ingress of water. While all the suspension components are off the car, I was able to tidy up all their mountings, and spray a tin of satin black into them, which was a nice touch. It looks lovely now.

I really want to do something about these fuel pipes. Does anyone know if copper is allowed? I was going through the MOT manuals yesterday, and it seems it's okay as long as nothing is loose or leaking. I would've expected there to be a british standard - I mean, surely paper straws aren't allowed, for example. I'd appreciate any input from anyone who knows about this.

I also discovered the brake failure module is located in the nearside tail light cluster. A bit suprising, but it means I needn't have used that trailer module after all, since the one green wire supplying the brake lights remains untested at my junction (I chose to house the gubbins in the offside corner). But, it's in now so might as well keep it. Besides, it's useful for the indicator bleepy thing.

Gonna have to make some kind of test lighting board. I might use the old lights from the donor car (which is still hanging around) and fashion a trailer light board for the innevitable occasion when I'll need to two somebody home.

Buying parts tomorrow! I've decided to keep the shock absorbers, since their bushes are in good order. Although rusty, they work okay, so now painted gloss red they'll do for a few years I reckon. But it means I can spend the money instead on new control arms, whose bushes are very worn and are long overdue.

Just fitted a new Klarius exhaust from cat to tailpipe, getting too old for jobs like this on my driveway, looks the bogs dollocks now. Also teaching myself to weld so I can attempt to replace the rear arch which is totally shot! I can then sell the X Type and start to enjoy driving a turbo petrol again. God I hate diesels!
