After my comment above about the Firestone Firehawk, i was looking at my spare wheel and noticed to my surprise it is a Firestone Firehawk!

For now i think i've solved my dilemna about which tyres to fit though. A friend just phoned to let me know he's coming up friday to buy something for his car from another friend and i happened to mention i was after some tyres and did he have any the right size kicking about?
He used to have his own tyre business and it just so happens..........
............he still has a trade account with at least one tyre wholesaler.

Going to give him the size etc and see what he comes up with - he's talking £20-25 +VAT per corner which will be very useful at the moment! At that price i won't be too worried about brand as long as they do a reasonable job of gripping the road. It will buy me some time to save up the necessary for a better set!

I had some many years back, very old design now and whilst they are predictable in the wet, grip levels are only average and they aquaplane at very low speeds. Due to Toyo's very weak soft sidewalls they are a comfort tyre rather than performance/sport, all that said, much worse on the market..

Further to my above post, i ended up with a set of four Invovic 195/65VR15 tyres thanks to my friend and his trade account.
They look pretty good to me, he's had a good look at both the tyres and the spec on them and reckons for a cheapie/budget radial they're a good spec so i'll find out once they're fitted!

I'll report back on my findings!

Good quality budget tyres are Sava (Goodyear) and Lassa (Bridgestone), I bought four Kumho's for our V70 recently for £212 fitted.

Jon.
I have fitted Kumhos on at least 3 of my cars, and have been very happy with them. Good price and not had any wear issues, inc, on a 940.

Michelin Cross Climates fitted approx 10k ago, I'm more interested in wet weather grip as that's the majority of the time it seems. They have been super so far.

I thought you all might like an update. I only got one tyre replaced in the end for another Uniroyal Rainsport 3 (the same as the others). The man at the tyre place said the others were all wearing very well so he'd only recommend replacing the one (if at all). I decided that this was better than the cost of replacing all four!

Also, I got the wheels aligned again and this time the car is driving much better!

I thought i'd add my little update as well. I was planning to get some "middle of the road" tyres, probably Falkens or similar but i was offered a set of brand new budgets for a very good price.

When i say a very good price, they were cheap enough that even if they only lasted 6 months before i had to replace them, they would pay for themselves.

However, i have to say i'm quite impressed. Firstly they're quiet. Only 69dB apparently but it sounds less than that.

Secondly, they grip very well, even in the wet. A couple of corners round my neck of the woods had the back end making like a fish in the wet on the old tyres, without being brutal. Not these, even with a heavy right foot! They just gripped!

Thirdly, they're a much more comfortable ride than the old ones. Granted i've gone from 60 to 65 profile which has also corrected most of the speedo error but the improvement in comfort is much more than i've experienced when changing profiles of tyres before.

What are these wonderful tyres then?

(There are other listings for 2 or more tyres with discounts for buying more than one at a time)

Stereotypically they are "Chinese Ditch-Finders". I may eat my words in time, when they "work harden" and don't grip so well but so far so good and they dispel the myth quite well.

I can't comment on the "C" rated economy yet as i've been deliberately a bit heavy footed and faster into corners to try and test them a bit, also with a few other improvements done recently the car is much smoother, quieter and livelier than it has ever been in my ownership. As such i've found myself traveling somewhat faster than usual which no doubt will impact the economy!

As it stands at the moment i'd happily recommend them as a cost-effective budget radial that does what it should
