Default High Milage?

Hi
I have had an older V40 with high mileage but lost it due to cambelt failure, now after four intermediate cars I am looking to return to the Volvo fold with a V50. Now, please don't shoot me down, what are your views on high mileage? Volvos have always been good with the miles but now that they are Ford based, is this the same? I was looking for a V50 08 or 09 (1.6D drive or 2.0D) but for £3k they are mostly 120K plus, can they still hack it?

Thank you

Bought my 2005 2.0l D with 126k 5yrs ago, on 174k now and still runs great. I service it every 6k and keep on top of any wear and tear stuff and it's never let me down

Properly maintained cars should hit 250k without major work. At around 120k usually suspension bushes and wishbones are required, possibly shock absorbers. Some time after you might need a clutch - on the diesel this is a £800+ job with the flywheel. I guess between 150k and 200k its likely to need an alternator and starter motor and some work to the air-conditioning and probably a good clean of the EGR system. And of course you will need tyres and brakes and MOT items.

Mrs T's V50 has 157k on it currently and running very well - that said I do a fair bit of preventative maintenance. We plan to continue running it until it ceases to be reliable - whether that's at 170k or 270k. We've had it 18 months and done 45k in it with no issues at all - but i did thoroughly overhaul it before she got it.

I can't really think of many other similar sized cars that you can predictably and cheaply take to these sorts of mileages, maybe a couple of VAG models?. There are some issues around the lower quality of some Ford sourced components (suspension, electrics) but the plus side is that they are cheaper to replace than Volvo or VAG parts on other cars.

The 2,0D is I think a more robust engine but the 1.6 is not bad at all. Yes they can hack it.

bought my S40 T5 around 45k, its now just clocked 112k in 3 years. Cannot fault it at all, love the car. had a 2.0D s40 previous and it was a bad egg, just keep ontop of the services and it will stay good

Mines on 182K, not that high really considering its coming upto 12 years old but,as far as I can tell, is still on its original battery, exhaust and clutch.
