V70: Engine Genuine D5 air filter - foam?

Hi All,

A quick one for those who know please. I was servicing my V70 D5 today and noticed the new genuine air filter has foam, maybe 5mm thick, right across the bottom side (bottom of photo). The Bosch filter I removed (top of photo) didn't, but had a little square in the corner.




I'm assuming the foam isn't packing material to be removed as it's stuck to the filter, and it fits snugly in the airbox, but just checking for those who've fitted them previously?

I assume it's something to muffle the intake noise, though I haven't seen one like it before so worth asking in case it shouldn't be there!

I did a Euro 3 XC90 recently and the filter had around a third coverage with foam. My Euro 3 doesn't have it though.
Seems to be a thing with some D5s but not every D5 and I can't see any particular pattern as to which ones have it.

VAG group cars have similar, standard paper element or if for cold climate it has foam attached........so I was informed?

All the ones i have replaced are with the grey foam across the entire area, no idea what the tiny square is for, looks a bit ineffective .. mann are the air filters ive used but im talking the euro 4 D5, what year is yours?

Thanks, All - I thought it was a bit odd. It’s a Euro 4 2009 (58 reg) 185bhp model. So long as the foam is supposed to be there for some models it’s fine then!

Just serviced my V70 D5 last week and old air filter was the same small piece of foam in the corner and the new genuine Volvo one had foam all over I assume it’s just a second piece of protection for larger dirt particles, how was your airbox screws btw only 1 out of 6 was taking a hold on mine probably due to the constant changing had to use cut cable ties to shove into each hole to give the screws something to grip to 😂

Great minds think alike, I had to do the same cable tie trick on one of my airbox screws that wouldn't grip, but I can definitely see the rest of them requiring it in future!

Yeah cable ties are the solution to everything 😂 wish they kept the Stainless steel clips that my old v40 had, easy to change air filter and also last forever without having to worry about stripped screw threads
