I would like to thank all you guys who gave me some input to help with resolving this problem.

It is now resolved !!!!!!!!!

It took him about 1 hour and the worst part, he said, was drilling out the middle of the bolt and tapping a thread in it. So all's well that ends well, or will be when I get the car back and drive it home without any issues.

Just to close this thread the guy WOT DONE IT insisted on giving me £150 as a reimbursement for my Glasgow trip to diagnose the autobox issue. I didn't expect this and can only say that despite the **** up he has gone up in my estimation by accepting without rancour or quibble the **** up he made, sorting it out and reimbursing me for expenses incurred as a result. I wish more garages behaved in this way.
The car is in to him next Thursday to have new cambelt etc fitted.
Tempting fate, blind optimism or complete confidence, you choose !

Its really good to hear that you have indeed been suitably compensated for your troubles and 'yes' I agree with you that more garages should up front and honest about their minor/major errors and recompense the customer if they are put out because of it.

That top anchor bolt (3rd gear band bolt) is VERY inviting to use as a filler plug for these AW boxes. They should all have some red paint on them or perhaps be a security bolt so they do not get removed by mistake.

Being so honest and upfront I would probably be tempted to use said garage again, I bet they pay due diligence on the next job??

Happy ending! Well done.

Is your's a diesel ? If it is, are you having the diesel pump belt changed ? This will need to be dynamically timed, if your man hasn't the right kit it'll more than like run ****e after. I know he held his hand's up on the box and gave you £150 back (good man), but unless he's really lucky it's gonna be out......EML on....sounds like a proper bag of nails....or won't start at all.
Just a thought.
