I suppose it depends who you're selling it too.

FSH on a car older than 3 years to me says the owner either didnt know how to service their own car, or simply couldnt be bothered. Which then makes me question whether the rest of the car has been looked after.

My T5 had 'full' volvo main dealer service history at 79,000 miles, yet when I investigated later I found a cam sensor unplugged and an ignition pack plug not plugged in properly and a very dirty air filter despite the supposed full service 4,000 miles ago.

So you service your own cars?

If i was in the market for a Volvo and i saw that it had been serviced by the owner and not a garage i wouldn't buy it. End of.

The whole point of a garage is to help drivers that actually don't know how to look after and repair their cars.

Just to add that Volvo dealers will offer free RAC full cover (Volvo Assist)when car serviced.

This has started from October. No good to me though as I purchased two years cover back in April.

It does however make the service more competitive. Incidentally I paid £198 for 50k service.

For a full dealer service this is still expensive but no more than any other mainstream manufacture.

Hello -

Paid £227 at my local garage today.

Seems OK for 70K service.

My 44k S40 1.6D has the dpf that should be changed at 70k at enormous cost. Going to keep the car for years hopefully so not too worried about how the history looks. What happens if I don't bother having it replaced?? I do enough long trips every week to never make the thing get blocked up, have never had a warning light come on, but will it eventually block up and fail anyway? And if it is to be changed, can an indy Volvo specialist do it for less than the £900 that Mr Volvo allegedly charges?

Thanks!

Also, main dealer servicing also helps if you ever need volvo goodwill.
its true. Goodwill is a 2 way street, support your local dealer and when complicated or costly repairs come around (and they will as we all know) an experienced volvo tech can offer far better advise, has the right equipment and will do the job far quicker than someone without years of working on the cars and knowing their faults
also if its by the hour: 3 x the length of time/book time by a substandard garage at 1/2 the price is still a lot more ( IF THEY CAN FIX IT AT ALL THAT IS!!!)

It will still block up and start causing other things to fault, so best have it changed. As for a specialist, they will do it cheap because they fit cheap. Aske them to fit a gen Volvo one for the same price, see what they say ?!

Thanks matey. If true, that's enough prompting for me to get rid of the car, never heard anything so stupid as a 'service' that costs that much. It's not as if it's the greatest car in existence anyway, yes' it's looks smart but the equipment level on mine is pretty basic for a 'prestige' make from 2007 and the real mpg from the 1.6D is disappointing at 53mpg at best. My old lump of an Avensis estate used to do as much, but the first signs of a failing head gasket made me trade that in in a huge hurry. Repent at leisure, eh? (bangs head against wall.......)
