I've seen that quoted before. I've had the code once in November and once yesterday. Could it be a red herring due to the engine cranking over for longer than normal? Or is a knock sensor on its way out very slowly?

To answer my own question, looks like it has decided it is broken this time. Engine light on a further two times with the same code.

Here is the DTC information, it would seem the fault is internal to the ECU, I'd get the Volvo codes read to confirm the diagnosis before I went any further.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information Condition The engine control module (ECM) has an internal fault in the knock sensor (KS) IC circuit. Substitute value -knock control disabled -ignition retarded for safety reasons. Possible source Faulty signal: -electrical fault in the IC circuit. Fault symptom[s] None. |

Had the codes read properly by Yosser tonight.
My generic obd2 reader shows P1011 - Powertrain. Volvo Vida shows ECM-640A - Camshaft reset valve faulty - clean valve engine code B5254S2 Much better news than I was expecting! Hopefully it will just need a clean and nothing else, and its easy to get to!

It seems your engine code is different to the one I posted the OBDII equivalent for so getting the Volvo code was a good move.
At least you have a correct diagnostic code to work from now. |

Problem seems to have gone. All Yosser did was unplug and remake the connection. I may just leave it as is. Actually, I will have a look to make sure oil ways and filter in gasket is clean. Thanks for your help.

Problem is back! I took the part off and the first thing I noticed was that the part containing the solenoid was extremely hot, hotter than the surrounding metal and oilways. There is no way to dismantle the part to get into the solenoid on the normally aspirated car which has the solenoid on the inlet side camshaft. It is a different part to that fitted on the turbo models which is on the exhaust side and is dismantleable. Everything on my part looks clean, but with no way to dismantle it I can't see if something is jamming it inside. I will take it off again to test the two connectors with an ohmmeter as I have read that low ohms = ok and high is a toasted part.
Now to find out how much a new one is! Car seems to run fine but with the engine symbol lit and showing a P1011 (false reading) or an ECM640A in Volvo speak.

Quick post to confirm that replacing the Variable Valve solenoid has fixed the problem and cleared the error. Vida does it again. (thanks Yosser!)
