Ticking Noise on cold start V50 1.6d- Pulley tensioner ?
I have read a few threads on this, but nothing confirming rectification.
On cold start there is a feint ticking or rubbing noise coming from were the belt contacts the pulley tensioner. Possible grit or moisture contact ? Disappears at normal running temperature. I spoke with a Volvo mechanic at a dealership and mentioned this was common and nothing much to worry about ! Curious to see if anyone else has experienced same problem and how it was resolved ? Cheers |

Yes mine does this but it depends where you are when you can hear it. If you have your head in the engine bay they you can hear it but not inside of the car or outside with the bonet shut. The only way I can put it really.

I can hear it with the window fully down (driver side) and the bonnet closed.
One of those annoying sounds, that keeps you wondering if not repaired, it may cause issues down the line. |

That does sound like it may be excessive but I have no idea if it will cause a failure. It may not cost much to get it replaced for your Peace of mind though, especially if you don't know when the auxiliary belt replaced or if the tensioner was done at the same time.

Nice one, thanks.
According to Volvo mechanic, 80-150GBP to put right with a replacement. Considering belts are good for 140k miles on this model and I have just turned 68k I should be good for while yet.. |

Under normal circumstances yes, they do last that long.
Good luck!

My 07 1.6d makes a similar noise, got quite bad in the winter, got the aux belt changed for £60 and it was a bit better. It's completely stopped now the temp has got above 10c. I think it's something to do with the tensioner rather than the belt, it's the only rusty bit in the bay.
