Latest update, and its driving me insane!!!

Got a new slave cylinder and fitted it, when i checked the rubber on the old one it was leaking fluid. It hasnt solved the problem though, before with the old one when the car engine was running you could select a gear but it would make a crunch noise. Now it wont, it will only go into gear with the engine off, its like there is something stopping it from going in.

While the engine is running there is a constant screech coming from the clutch or gearbox, getting louder if you push the clutch pedal down.

The Master Cylinder shows no signs of any leaks at all, im completely baffled!!!

Any help would be great, thanks.

sounds like the thrust bearing on the clutch or the pressure plate but it needs a full box out job, and changing these 3... the centre plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing.

had this problem myself on another car...and my father confirms this....(40 years in the motor trade, so he has seen a few)

atleast you have solved the one problem with the slave cylinder...but there is more problems that are there to be sorted.

as they say...SHHHH*** happens.

Default slave cylinder

Your problem is the gear linkage. Change this and the gears will fall into place easily.

Thanks for your reply!
Any idea how much these parts will cost and where from? The cheapest quote we've had for the labour to take the box off and do work is £150, that was when we thought it was the clutch itself first of all.
The clutch is only meant to be just over a year old, but we are not sure if it could be a bit of a botched job or not.

Thanks

Just an update.

After a few weeks off the road we have had the work done in a garage. It was the thrust bearing that was the main problem, but we had the whole clutch changed while the box was off. Good as new now, thanks for the help guys!

Hi,

I have a T reg S40 SE 1.8 GDI,
It has the same external slave cylinder as shown in the origonal picture
I recently had my clutch renewed and although my clutch was past its use by life I found that the feel was still heavy, I checked the rubber on the slave and noticed it was leaking.

I have a bleading kit and have bled it to no avail.

I have struggled to find a repair kit for the cylinder as some companys seem to think its the concentric clutch,

does anyone here know the best place to either get hold of a repair kit or a cheep slave cylinder?

I'm weary about online breakers as I might end up with the wrong cylinder.

Many thanks

Stu

although i did mine a good while back as i commited the sin of selling my s40 back in june and bought a BMW (arrrggh I'M GOING TO BE FLAMED NOW BY EVERYONE.)

Still thinking of getting a s40 t4 next year.

two seater bmw = no room but power
