A bit of a dilemma
Hi everyone,
I have a 1998 R reg V40 T4 cd, 137,000 miles with full Volvo service history. It's in excellent condition and runs well. I took it to a one man Volvo specialist because I've been having problems getting it in to 5th gear. At first I thought it was the common problem with the nut undoing on the primary shaft, but this chaps says it's the syncro and that it's not fixable and that i should get rid of it fast before the ecu starts to play up. He says T4's are crap and but my wife and I love the car, can I get the syncro fixed if so how much? or should I do as he says and get rid of it? Any advice would be much appreciated. You say "Its 9 year old with 137,000miles on it... FSH, it runs well and is in excellent condition and you and the missus love the car..."
Your Volvo specialist says "T4's are crap" Clearly one of you is wrong, and although I'm somewhat biased, i'd say its not you. I think others here will agree? All I can say is "seek a second opinion" |

He cant be a very good specialist I would leave him alone in future.
Take it to your local dealer and see what they think it is it might just be the gearlinkage cables worn or stretched, they should be able to walk outside and take it for a spin without charging you. You should be able to get the gearbox rebuilt and a new syncro fitted for £500-600 at a guess, just phone around a few gearbox places(im sure someone on here must be able to recommend someone as well). Make sure they rebuild yours though and arent going to fit a replacement box. As for the ECU going wrong Ive never heard of that and there are plenty of high mileage T4s still driving around ok. |
