try working the catch at the front back and forth by pulling the bonnet release with the bonnet open whilst oiling it with some WD40 or similar .. It's most likely the catch is stiff due to lack of lubrication . It should free off ok ..

so the bonnet is not popping up on its own you have to lift it whilst the cable is pulled?
try winding the two rubber stops down a bit to tension the catch a bit more ...

If the cable feels slack there's a fair chance that it's stretched and is on the verge of breaking, they corrode at the very outer end where all the weather comes through the grill, it's a bit of an out of site out of mind thing until it breaks like mine just has. when you next manage to get the bonnet open, remove the lock mechanism and check the cable end, hopefully you'll get it before it breaks

hi chaps, the cable snapped on my v40 t4 not so long ago, i had to take it to my local garage to have a new cable fitted which cost around 110 quid if memory serves me correct. But i've just noticed its starting to stick again, the bonnet doesnt pop up when the catch is released i have to do it myself, hmm...think i better take some of the above advise and get some oil on the mechanism quick before it costs me another 100 quid!

My cable broke and only way to release the catch was to take a hacksaw to the grill. Managed to get fingers through to release it. then with bonnet open, attached a length of wire to the catch and fed it through the front of the grill so it just dangles outside the grill. That way it cost nothing but looks a bit strange with a bit of wire hanging through the the front of the grill. At least will never be caught out again. Alternatively buy a new bonnet catch and hassle with joining wire to lever in footwell...costs a fortune.
