Default V40 Reverse problem

I have an R reg V40se 1.8 and have just 'lost' reverse, the ring that you lift on the gear lever is solid and won't move at all, just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what it could be, and how difficult / expensive it is to fix

Mine has always been stiff to get into reverse, sometimes it wont engage right at all (something to do with the synchro mesh possibly as the gears don't disengage totally), i've changed the gear linkage bushes which seem to give lots of problems on these but that didn't really help much.

My garage were baffled and couldn't fix it so in the end they said put it in first and then go for reverse which seems to work for my problem.

Not sure that it sounds the same as what you are experiencing though.

Edit: just read your post again.. totally not the same problem as yours! looks like fun taking that apart though. is that a stanley knife being used to remove the selector knob?!

Default reverse

on your car Chris that sounds like your clutch dragging when you put it in first it stops the shafts revolving which allows reverse to engage,do you have to push it a long way down,if not its probably the centre plate a bit tight on the mainshaft, nothing to panic over though
