There does appear to be a dipstick with two pronged clamps to keep it firmly in its location.

Can anyone familiar with the D range confirm this is the correct dipstick upon looking at the photo of it please?
2011 XC60D3 fwd Who knows were the dipstick is. I can read it by electronic
means. thank full for an answer.

turn the ignition on ( Engine not running ) .. scroll through the fuel computer readouts , average speed , average mpg, instantaneous etc , one of these readings will be oil level ..
You will get a message up if the level is too low or too high .

feet off the pedals , press the START switch for about 2 seconds until the ignition comes on ( all the warning lights come on ) then try the scrolling through fuel computer readouts ... It wont work with the engine running or on stage 1 of ignition .

Thought the dipstick was a bit of a ballache to get to. Hadn't got to that part of the manual describing the electronic readout and had not noticed it when scrolling through the various readouts with engine running or ignition on only.
Will try this next time I'm in the car.

Can confirm the electronic on screen display matches the plastic stick at the base of the sump. I'll use the digi readout and once it maybe reaches 1/3rd will pull the stick to confirm if it ever gets that low...

You will get a message if it ever gets low and it will tell you how much to put in , Don't ever overfill it though or it will be a trip to the garage .
The oil level measuring system is very accurate it can detect the difference if you put 200 ml in .

Thanks !

I never had to put oil into my almost 100k mile S60 D5 between services so I will be very disappointed if I have to add any oil between services for my D3.

A little word of warning about using the 'service only' plastic dipstick on the Volvo 5 cylinder engines, which applies to all variants so fitted.
The plastic dipstick in not designed for regular and routine use, and can also become rather brittle when cold or old! (Old doesn't really apply yet). If you are going to attempt to use it, take great care. If you should have the misfortune to snap it, then its an engine out (I understand from my dealer) to remove the broken stub from the sump!
I am not endorsing the plastic dipstick in any way, my personal opinion is that this is a retrograde step by Volvo, just posting this as advice.
