Default V70 2.0d Fuel Economy

Everybody is talking about the mpg from the D5 so I thought I'd ask the following question.

What mpg are you getting from your 2.0d ?

I not happy with mine, I have never yet achived more than mid 30's

First couple of tanks I thought that I wasn't prehaps driving it that well having just swapped from a reasonably quick petrol to a big diesel estate but now I'm not so sure.

Car is a 09 model year 2.0d R-Design with 2400ish miles on the clock and the climate control turned on all the time.

Do I bring it up at my 3 month inspection and ask if there are any software upgrades or see how it goes.

Your mpg figures and thoughts appreciated

I have a S80 with a 2.0d engine. Have done about 2800 miles in total. I'm getting 44 MPG (real MPG not trip computer). This is a mixture of town, A road and motorway driving. I do drive with economy in mind sticking and I stick to the speed limit on the motorway. I use Total Excellium Diesel (costs 106.9 p per litre at present) - I'm sceptical about its claims for fuel economy but I like the additives for smoother running. Costs about £3 extra per tank.

What is interesting is looking at the instantaneous consumption figures on the trip computer. 4th gear on an A road at 50 MPH is more economical, according to the trip computer than 5th gear.

I hope that the MPG will improve a little more once the engine loosens up.

Just bought a new 20d V70 it is averaging 47.3 mpg back and forth to work a fairly fast A road and back lanes it did average 52 mpg on the motorway (with cruise set to 65) the bit that takes some getting used too is NOT driving in the highest gear like we were taught I still sometimes drive in 6th when 4th is the more economical gear try driving on the instantaneous figure for a while and adjust your style
hope this helps

Got my 2.0d R Design V70 this week. Still on the first tank so too early to tell but I re-set the computer when I first filled it up and 200 miles later the computer is saying 44.2mpg on a mix of motorway (cruise set to 78) and A road driving. The distance to empty is showing as 560miles. Given that it should improve with more miles I'm perfectly happy with this figure. My previous 2.0tdi A6 would be saying 44mpg on the computer used in the same way (after 50k miles) but the Audi computer was a rotten liar and it would only work out at 40-41mpg at the pump. I seem to remember the Audi only showing about 38 on the first few tanks and then gradually improving for the first 20k miles. If the Volvo improves in the same way I might be getting 50mpg when its fully run in.

I have an S40 2.0D the comparisons are not the same, but bear with me. When I first picked up the car, 172 miles on the clock, I could not get better than 43-44mpg, real test not computer. I am now up to 21,000 miles and I average 48-50mpg and just managed 53mpg on a 600 mile round trip. People told me that once you get past 10,000 miles you really start to notice a difference with the mpg. That would certainly ring true with me.

Once your car is checked out it may just be the case that you have to simply clock up some miles and let the engine loosen up.

I agrea Harvey

I had my run in with Volvo but they do make a good car to be fair and the miles per gallon I find is good for a car this size

I dont hang around in any circumstances and dont pay for the servicing to give you an idea of how I drive and can hit on motorways 50MPG sitting just over 80 ok closer to 90 lol

around town 30mph to me is a figure you pass to get to speed that follows traffic in front, at traffic lights im always first across and city driving it drops to 34 mpg
Just recently towed a caravan to south Spain and spent 6 weeks touring Spain and France the caravan weighs a good 1400Kg and my averadge mileage over 4K miles was 27 mpg with caravan on back

Current mileage is 13K engine has freed up nicely and stacks of both top end and pulling power

Not bad for a 2.0 D id say
