Default A few Jobs Done

Replaced my crank position sensor on my 1996 Volvo 940 and to be honest wasn't too bad a job. 10mm ring spanner and around 40 minutes it was done.

Then replaced my heater control valve with a £25 Ebay one. I'm sure it won't last like the Volvo original but better than leaking. I got it done in time before total failure.

It was a pain as the jubilee clips were facing sideways and no room for a ratchet spanner.
Thought remove pipe off lower bulkhead stub and pull hole thing out to the passenger side but jubilee clip wouldn't undo and thought the stubs through the bulkhead may be brittle plastic? Didn't want to cause and headaches.

Pulled off the vacuum hose.

So got it loose enough with small spanner to turn the jubilee clip screw slot facing upwards to then undo with a screwdriver.

Pulled the one pipe off and then did same with other jubilee clip. When I twisted/pulled the control valve off the plastic outlet pipe was so brittle the stub stayed in the hose!

Shows that's where my leak was as when the car wouldn't start I saw dripping in that area!

Fitted new hose clips and fitted new heater valve in same flow direction and refilled with fresh coolant.

All good and non leaking.

Yesterday fitted my fuel pump relay and ignition module. Used working items now the spares in the glove box.

Next job is to replace the droplinks and front anti roll bar bushes as mild cracking. Since a few days after the MOT have noticed a clunking noise from nearside front only on bumpy surfaces. Not when turning, only straight ahead on uneven, holed roads.

It was never quiet, as springs always creaked but need to investigate when I do the above. Everything visually looks ok. Any ideas?

James

Could be track rod ends or ball joints.

Almost certainly the drop links James, especially if the bushes are cracking up. It's amazing how much noise is created by worn drop links.

I replaced my heater valve with a length of stainless pipe and it’s been fine ever since. Not even sure it really does anything except go brittle and leak. I’ve still got hot and cold air but I don’t have the air con hooked up as the system has depressurised so I’m not sure how it would effect that.

On a hot day when you want cold air out of the heater, you won't get it as there will still be hot coolant flowing through the heater matrix.

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed.

I just wish my late 940 had the passenger footwell vent like our old 740 had, they were great in summer.

That takes me back to when I had a 1986 740 GLE estate in around 2002.

Had the foot well vents!

Also had the red interior seats and trim. Some broken when I bought the car. Amazingly got lucky as a 740 estate that had just arrived had the same colour interior! I was so excited! Got all parts I needed!

James.
