Thanks Cheshire. Nice to hear from people who try things, and don't assume.
I will try one, but keep my original as I found they can be rebuilt.
Which side fails, or do people change both?

There are plenty over 200k miles without issue so difficult to say that one side is more likely than the other.
You only need to change the the defective one. Replacement of pairs isn't necessary.

You did look at the feedback on the google search pop-up box? A lot of it's from very unhappy people.

I went OE salvage for mine (S60, that is) a couple of weeks ago, at a lower price than these and all's well.

If this question is aimed at me, no I haven't looked at any feedback.
I'm passing on that my work colleague was very happy with his and I've used JR many times for CV related bits and pieces and had lots of reluctor rings off them too.

I take as I find and so far, I find them to be more than good enough for what I've needed.

If and when I need a driveshaft, I'll weigh up my options from new to salvage to remanufactured.
I've found with many purchases of many products from many suppliers that internet feedback alone doesn't mean a great deal to me.

No, it was for the OP.

As I have no intention of changing the car any time soon and the original near side driveshaft lasted well over 110k software-tuned miles, I swallowed hard and stumped up 300 notes for a Volvo OEM item when it started to clonk on power take-up and gear change. At 136k miles (and circa 120k with the BSR PPC softeware tune and its wall of torque) the original offside one is still going strong.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

I didn't go with J and R in the end, but I can't remember why. I got a new rather than manufactured one for about 100 odd quid but I'm afraid I can't remember the make, though I think they were an oem manufacturer - not for Volvo.

It's still fine, but then it's only done about 15k since then and I guess most would last that long unless something is drastically wrong, so even if I could remember what it was, I don't think I could recommend it for the next few years!

I have read a lot of reviews, and many from other marque forums give this company glowing reviews. As one reviewer said with a list of products they have, being in business for 20 years in this industry, you are bound to get some complaints. Some forums have people saying they use these parts in track cars or heavily modified road cars, and they still survive.
Of course you'll get the odd rogue one if you sell that many.

I like the idea of a used OEM part, but then I remember all the used parts I have ordered that arrive looking worse than the bit I'm replacing? What if the part quoted as 'almost new' actually came off a car having done 1000 miles less than mine? Not saying all scrappies lie, just some may have remembered the wrong donor car.

I have had 2 'specialist mechanics' drive my car and each was sure the problem was a different shaft, and I only really think it's near side as the potholes give that side more of a pounding on our roads. Can anyone suggest a valid test? None of the You tube videos seem to show more than visible wear.
Still not decided on a course of action, but shudders are getting worse and that can't be good for other components.

Anyone else had experience of changing driveshafts?

It was the offside on mine. The symptoms were very much those of a wheel balance problem in that I'd get a shudder at around 65mph which would then dissapear at 70. I also had a jerking/snatching in slow speed traffic. Jacking it up, it became clear the play was on the inner cv joint and this was pretty obvious as you could feel the movement by holding the inner shaft while moving the wheel. The outer joint seemed good as new.

It was well under an hour's work to change, so even if a cheaper one doesn't last as long as 300 quids worth of genuine Volvo, I'm not sure I'm too worried.

might be worth getting new drive shaft seals for the gearbox from volvo, i changed both shafts and both leaked, so had to replace the seals, i think they were £13.60 for the pair
