I tried something similar with an old brake disc and a bit of welding. It was a waste of time - I bought the expensive gucci Volvo special tool. It is so expensive I've considered putting it on a gold braided red cushion in its own backlight glass box...

...perhaps I could add in the sound of singing angels when I open the door to get it out

The screw thread looks too coarse on that one. The Volvo one has a very fine thread that multiplies the torque so can have it turn more degrees for a given movement against the driveshaft. Compare a Whitworth thread to a BSF one and you'll get an idea as to what I mean.

I'm sure you are correct but it was what I had available to me and it worked!

If your hub isn't stuck it may well work. If the hub has been off fairly recently it may also work but if it's stuck it's a poor choice compared to the proper one with a fine thread. With the proper puller and a co operative hub they just wind off with a couple of taps if needed. Some pukka Volvo pullers have a large nut which takes a large spanner. A ring one is best. The other type has a short bar for hammering on. You can get a short spanner to use on the nut type for hammering on, and they are good to have. A bit expensive for what they are but they have to be STRONG!

Just a thought to 'throw out there', with all the trouble that many people have removing the drums is it possible that Volvo recommended a higher torque setting for the hub nut than is strictly necessary?

I don't think so. Those parts are understandably done up tight to avoid Boudica charriot-like situations (!)
