Is there not a speed restriction for using inner tubes?

[I thought there was but the big joke for series diesel Land Rovers is that they will never reach that speed unless they're driven off a ski slope with the clutch pedal firmly on the floor...]

Its usually the seal between the tyre and the wheel especially with older alloy wheels.
Older alloys can also become porous over the years...
If you can find a large drum of water lower your wheel into it and watch for small bubbles of water escaping..

Varying opinions on tubes in tubeless tires. Some say yes, some say no. Something to do with flexing and abrasion between the tube and tire and speed limitations. More importantly if the interface between the two dissimilar metals has degraded and caused a leak, then maybe there is also some structural weakness that might present itself at an inopportune moment?

Not using tubes might also be a country difference / insurance company rule - this is one of those pieces of information that is nagging in the back of my mind but with my recent memory loss problems I just can't remember for the life of me from where that nugget came!

In the Mercedes world alloy wheels are known to become porous and thus eventually of no use.

Way back when I used to perform eddy current tests on aircraft wheels - looking for cracks. I have only ever seen one company in Holland doing such work. On refurbishing old alloy wheels one would hope that people would have an eye for such potential problems. Unfortunately it seems to me that here it is just a case of powder coating...
