Hellfire this is getting obscure. VanVeen! Every bike mad schoolboys fantasy in the 70s. Mega expensive 1000cc rotary from Holland(?) and usually in green. Not a bad looking bike. Nicer than the DKW. I wonder how a modern rotary engine would sound in a 66 with cvt?

Guilty as charged! I also had schoolboy thing for the DKW, and Laverda Jotas (conventional, but monsters). The only modern rotary bike, but still quite (if not mega?) rare is the Norton, of course.

The 66 idea is totally wicked. Rx8 motor tied to a cvt, in a tiny little 66, lotsa fun

Cheers,

T

Oh, happy days . . .

The sound would be weird. It'd definitely screw peoples heads up. Straight to optimum revs wi no gearchanges. Do rotaries work with expansion chambers? That would just be wierderer n wierderer lol. Bwaaaaaaa..... What the hell was that?!

I really don't know, Ste; but you have started the little grey cells running. I do know the CVT can take masses of power.

Do you rememember the yellow Daf 66 coupe they rallycrossed in the seventies? I seem to remember it was very quick and trounced the opposition, can't remember the motor it had, but it was def CVT.

Cheers,

T

p.s. A Birotor went unsold on eBay france just the other week. 1974, a little bit ropey in the body, but apparently running, and quite nice inside. It was in mid-france, and he wanted 3,000 euros. Appeared to be being kept in a barn.

Rallycross in the 70s! Absolutely barking! Can't remember the Daf, just a zillion Mini Clubmans wi checkered rooves. I might be biased but I think Volvo missed out on a few sales not marketing the coupe. I remember when I was a kid that the name DAF was just too close to daft. Wouldn't have been so bad as Volvo but I still admired their stylish looks.

The rallycross DAFs were powered by modified versions of the standard Renault engines. If I remember correctly, the best part of 200bhp was available from some of them...naturally aspirated.

cheers

James

I seem to remember they started out with the Renaults and graduated to the BDA, but memory plays tricks.

The K series motor hasn't ever been reckoned to be a really great engine by most bikers, and BMW afficianados still swear by the venerable old flat twin. To be honest, there are advantages to using the flat twin as the c of g is way lower, and they still produce lots of power, and can easily be tuned. If shaft drive wasn't a priority and you wanted to be (relatively) patriotic, I'd say use a Daytona 1000.

Cheers,

T
