[QUOTE=340_Chris;452489]Yes, when the throttle was pressed the fuel came out of the jets in a thin stream - which I assume is how it's supposed to be yes?
QUOTE] Yes thats ok then :-)

If you find its running very much too rich all the time, it may well be the float chamber flooding, or level set too high. I'm sorry I don't have the correct spec to hand, but it should be in any workshop manual.
This is a 1.4 right? OK the float arm should be gently touching the ball bearing/damper on the needle, gently closing the needle, rather than pressing it hard. The best way I've found is to get a drill bit that's the specified width and run that underneath the float to gauge the gap rather than trying to judge it by eye. |

Bad Times
Thanks for the extra help guys. I'm afraid that things have gone from bad to worse :-(
Shortly after leaning the mixture off I did a long drive (about 120 miles on the motorway) and everything seemed fine. The return journey, however, was rather different. I was forced to stop every 35 miles or so to clean off the plugs because they were getting so sooty (bear in mind I was sticking to between 65 and 70 MPH - so not ragging it or anything). It looks like it's definately running far too rich all the time now so I'm going to have to resort to the trains for a couple of weeks :-/ I've managed to source a spare carb at a scrappy and so it would probably be prudent to refurbish it - does anyone know where I can get a kit for the weber carb from? Many thanks. Chris |

Rather than copy all the info out, I'm going to linky you to a helpful thread on V3M!

I was gonna say....for a quick fix, just swap out the carb while you rebuild the original at your leisure. That's almost certainly the cause of your problem.
cheers James

Even quicker, and completely free, is to check that float height.....its absolutely crucial to the running mixture.....

Scrappy Carb
Hello again everybody. I've got a second-hand carb which is currently lying in a bath of WD40.
I gave it a very quick look over the other day and was a bit puzzled by the butterflys on the bottom of it. One opens freely when you engage the throttle (which I presume is the primary one) but there's another which doesn't move at all - whichever part of the throttle/choke I move around. Is this correct or is this second butterfly supposed to move too? Cheers. Chris p.s. I've had the refurb kit through so I can crack on with doing the original carb in the meantime. |

the secondary larger throttle should start to open about 60 % of full throttle then at the full stroke of the throttle lever on the carb both should be fully open .. You DO have a weber 32 DIR Variant? Should be stamped on the edge of the lower mounting flange ...

That's right - it says 32DIR104.
The two throttle valves look the same size. The primary one opens about 80 % but the secondary one doesn't open at all. It looks like the shaft going through the secondary one is connected to some kind of diaphragm by a thin shaft. |

In the photo the top throttle valve is opening but the lower one isn't. Am I getting confused about which bit is which?
