Frustrated!!
Pump was changed and all appeared to be working well, ran the tank down low and eventually the fuel light popped on 😁 All working well or so I thought! Decide to fill it to the top with Sainsbury’s best 68 liters. Surprised only to see the fuel gauge registering half a tank and a range of 410 miles! Rang mechanic and he said it appears that the other sender unit is knackered as well! Get home and Diesel leaking all over the floor from underneath the car! It appears to be coming from above the tank. I can only think that the mechanic didn’t replace the rubber seal or hasn’t tightened the rings up properly on the tank! Bloody annoying! They can replace the other sender while they’re in there!! I know it’s a good car I just need to get these issues sorted!!

I had similar breakdowns. One on the motorway with a very similar description to yours. Shame you did not find my posts about the same problem as it could have saved you the cost of replacing parts. The fuel level float can get stuck against the interior of the tank which causes it to indicate fuel when there is none. All fixed by turning the top of the sender unit under the back seat by a couple of degrees which rotates the float clear of the side of the tank.

Picked the car up this afternoon and fingers crossed all seems good. It’s now had the low pressure pump replaced as well as the other sender unit including new rubber seals. To be honest I’m just glad it’s sorted. Now I can concentrate on home servicing it and hopefully another 100000 miles of trouble free motoring.
