Another theory...
What if we're getting hydro-lock, preventing the engine from turning, eg maybe caused my excessive fuel leaking into the bores when shut down? - That would cause either sluggish cranking, or in extreme cases no cranking at all. - Either case would cause WAY more amps being drawn by the starter, which in turn would cause the battery voltage to drop significantly. - Changing the starter motor & battery wouldn't help I'd say next step is a DC clamp-meter on the starter or battery cable when attempting to start to see what the current is. If much more than 300A then we have a problem. If the car is manual you could see if the engine will rotate when pushed in 5th gear. If auto then you can't test that. If excessive current is found then i'd start looking at the injectors for leaking...

Hi,
There's a voltage drop of 1.8v on each cable (positive and ground) when cranking. The voltage drop was measured with multimeter probes plugged between the battery and starter. I've checked and cleaned the positive cable connections and the negative lead from the starter to the chassis connection point behind the front headlight. All of them seem to be ok. I couldn´t reach the negative connection point to the chassis next to the firewall. I also think there's too much current being drawn when the engine is hot, my DC clamp-meter has a scale with a maximum value of 100A, I will borrow one with a larger scale to measure the current driven by the starter. I think a better choice would be using an analog meter to avoid reading delay, but I will have to manage with a digital one. Thanks |
