I would advice OP replacing all 4 if he decides to go with crossclimate ones.
You didnt specify how "fine" the other Avons are - if those are brand new, than ofcourse go for only 2, but if those are for replacement in next few thousand k, I would just go for brand new set.
Btw - I switched from 205/50 to 225/45. Tyre price is sometimes 30e difference and MUCH bigger choice from. Was able to get Goodyear Eagle F1's for 82euros a piece from oponeo. Compare that to price of 205/50, yikes!

225/40 should replace 205/50, 225/45 may make the speedo under read (though it may make it accurate).

Furry muff, I stand corrected!
Unusual though, although the rule of thumb is, err, a rule of thumb, it usually takes quite a deviation from original size to become notably out of whack...

Heh no worries, but thats what make 225/45 almost perfect replacement. deviation is within 1kmh or so and tyre is just marginally wider (it may affect mpg by a tiny bit but also makes car more stable AND protects the rim even more as it is a bit more bulky). Main difference though - as said - PRICE!!!!
well recommended.

I'd recommend Michelin CrossClimate or CrossClimate+. Had them on my S40, we have them on the V50 and I run them on my campervan. They are excellent all year round.
Another vote for these superb tyres. On my C30 they’ve covered 28k miles now and the rears have just started to feather the inside edge, another 3k miles maybe and I’ll be replacing them with the + version. They are expensive but they’re very quiet and on one occasion during December 2017 when we had heavy snowfall in Oxfordshire I know I wouldn’t have got home without them. I had to abort three attempts on rural routes turning round each time due to other cars blocking the road.

As did I when I got my set of CrossClimates, 205/50/R17 -> 225/45/R17, was about £15 cheaper per tyre and much better wheel rim protection, haven't scraped mine any more since I swapped the tyre size.

Thanks again for your replies. I have decided to go to Blackcircles and probably Goodyear. My problem is the speed ratings, I don't intend going very fast so do I need a W rating tyre?

You must use the correctly rated tyre specified for your car at the factory otherwise you could have insurance issues.

Thanks, I didn't realise that. I have just ordered four Goodyear EfficientGrip at the correct speed rating from Blackcircles.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.
