Diy is very possible and a number of panels available. Running through a charge controler is nessesary on higher wattage panels, some of the smaller ones you can run without. To my mind for safety reasons I preffer the charge controler method and spend the money on the controller, it's what keeps the system safe, without it there is a risk of overcharging. My system has an 80w panel, 100 and 120 are readily available. I have found the 80w to be fine keeping the battery charged while van in storage. One thing with diy never ever cut the lead from the panel in one go, if you need to shorten them split the cable and cut one core at a time. Shorting the panel will ruin it and you cannot stop it generating so cut the cable and whizz pops will result. Paul. |

Thanks, that's really useful information. Do you know the make and model of the controller on your van ?

That'd be really helpful; don't make a special trip just to do that though.
