Default XC60 gearbox drive shaft issues

I recently bought a 2nd hand Volvo XC60 for the wife. Its a 2011 model with the D5 2.4 215BHP model and an auto box. It's a high spec car with BLIS, front and rear sensors, cameras and interactive cruise control.
Car has a full Volvo service history and we are its 3 owner from new.

Car was fine for the first 4 weeks......well apart from the rear bushes needed changing and the alternator belt was badly worn. Out for a drive, I shoved my foot to the floor to get past something and the dash showed 'Transmission service required.' I arranged with the local Volvo dealer to get it in for the codes to be read.

Code was TCM-P074100. lock up Solenoid.

Garage suggested that the next step was to let them have the car for adaptions to be made via a computer.
This was agreed and done. Less than 1 mile after picking the car up the dash showed 'transmission service required.' Called the garage and they said 'these adaption's can take two or three goes to get them to fix the issue. Bring it back and we will read the codes.' Booked the car back in, they have the car and I'm rung with a new code.

TCM-D074100.

After chatting with the garage our new car needs a complete new gearbox control unit with solenoids and valves costing £1294 from volvo plus £300 of seals, gaskets and oil. Add in £400 of labour too that's close on £2,000 of work on the wifes 'New' car.

I call the garage that sold us the car as its under warranty, and they suggest that the car just needs a gearbox oil/filter change. They also wanted the car back. So I took them the car and they checked the codes. Brought me the car back and told me to take it home and they would chat with a gearbox specialist. They also stated that the code reader now shows:-

DTC not activated.

What the heck does that mean?

Has somebody switched the code reader off in the car so it wont show any faults?

So to add injury to insult the car has now started a clicking sound when I turn hard right on full lock. Sounds like the CV joint is failing and the drive shaft on the drivers side needs replacing.

Are these separate issues or is it possible they are linked?

So it looks like I'm left with a right lemon of a XC60 that looks the business but mechanically its not.

Does anybody now what the codes really mean? Can anybody shed some light on them for me.

How long ago did you purchase the car ?

Which Volvo dealership did you take it to?

If its covered under the volvo selekt warranty the garage should really be doing more to help. It seems like they are shying away from the issue.

I'm guessing this wasn't bought from a Volvo dealer.

Possibly the garage you bought it from cannot properly read transmission codes. That would ideally require Volvo diagnostic equipment... Something like a Snap-On machine might read these codes on your car, but it would require them to have the correct key.

I'd either want the repair to be carried out by Volvo or a full refund.

Sadly from experience (a friends car) private car dealers will do anything to avoid costly repairs, this includes disabling sensors and hard resets (disconnecting the car battery for a few hrs) so that the error codes disappear for a week and then suddenly reappear. I would take the dealers word on these issues.

My guess - DTC - Diagnostic Trouble Code - they have disconnected an electrical connector to disable all the fault codes hence the DTC not activated.... Trading standards time perhaps, the mileage must be stratospheric for these various faults to be appearing. So maybe the vehicle has had a milage readjustment or clocking s it's known.
Email the seller to ask what DTC not activated means, get an email reply, not a telephone call, take it to the Volvo dealer who will tell you what they have disconnected then trading standards with the evidence of foul play.

Default Trouble with cars....

Yes. It was a non Volvo Dealer sale.

They had the car for less than 20 minutes to read the codes so it's unlikely they pulled the battery for 2 hours.

Online MOT mileage works with the cars mileage so it's unlikely to have been clocked. NO, it's not moon and back miles but its slightly higher than normal. It was the right car and what we could afford.

Lipscomb's Volvo did the code read, Adaption's and the subsequent Code read and diagnostics of the fault.

We've had the car 3 months now. The fault occurred in late November and was in the garage to be code read early December. It took to just before Xmas for the adaptions to be done and subsequent code read was 2 weeks into the new year.

The other issue is my wife. Telling her to take the car back and get our money back is met with a torrent of abuse and a stern 'NO.' She totally loves her car even with its faults. I would also suggest that the dealer is very unlikely to take it back after 3 months of ownership even though the fault started 4 weeks after we bought it. They have been aware and authorised the adaptions to be done plus paid for the work.

Well. I would ask the seller why they disconnected/disabled the diagnostic, hint at talking to trading standards and see if they will contribute towards a fix. A specialist gearbox repair outfit may be a cheaper option than the official Volvo route.
