S40 2.0T SE - Oil & Filter Change

My 1999 2.0T SE is due an oil change - I've got everything that I need but was horrified to discover that the filter is not the spin-on type , it's a horrible crappy paper cartridge filter like the old motorbike type.

Question - I haven't had chance to have a root about in the engine bay yet so can anyone give me a rough idea where the filter housing is?

The filter housing is set into a sort of notch on the sump itself.

You'll need a special tool to get the housing off, and a new o-ring too.

O-Ring should come with the new filter, if none in with the filter, go and buy a decent quality filter, they don't cost the earth and that is not an area where skimping on cost is a good idea! Use good quality oil too, your engine will thank you for it! Best of luck.

The filter is about £7 from a Volvo main dealer (it includes a new o-ring for the plastic case). I think a lot of car manufacturers are using this type of filter nowadays, Volvo, BMW, VW, even the little Smart Car uses the paper filter element. I suppose they are cheaper and you're not throwing away a metal casing at the end of the day.
