Default Rumble unknown

Rumble first diagnosed by Volvo indy as PS diff.
2 gearbox technicians diagnosed it as wheel bearings not PS.
Volvo indy happy to replace wheel bearing but has double checked and convinced it is not bearing and doesn't want to charge £300 if it's not going to fix the problem (fair guy).
Does anyone have any suggestions please ???

Rumble as in a noise? Or rumble as in vibration?

And where is the rumble coming from?

My own experience was an almost road / tyre noise rumble. Garage thought bad tyres as there was no play in the rear wheel bearings.

After I asked them to replace the bearings they turned out to be FUBAR and it solved the issue...

But noises can be so difficult to pin down - maybe others can help narrow the search?

Sorry. It's a deep rumble not vibration. No problems with tyres. It's coming from the front.
Garage had a good look at the front bearings but couldn't find any issue.
In the back of my mind I have a feeling that these bearings design doesn't always show up as play as such, or is that my imagination?

I had to replace a front wheel bearing on my 70k C30. Noise started as a low rumble when going around a corner. Ended up unbearable after 5k miles. The only symptom when the car was stationary was a slight drag when spinning a wheel. Friend at a garage helped me to swap them (did both sides) and it took 4 hours.

Can anyone confirm. According to Haynes replacing the bearings involves a lot of work removing complete hub assembly and needing a volvo tool too remove the bearing ?

The bearings are pressed into the hub so you'll need a strong press to remove them and re-install them.

Or you can possibly get the whole hub/bearing assembly and just change it all at once.

Volvo dealers might sell the hub and bearing as they were going to change it all when I queried a wheel bearing price with them. Over £200 though.

When I had bad hub weel bearings it was easy to tell right a way -
1. When cornering the sound would become louder or dissapear, interestingly the front left hub was louder when turning left, so when unloaded...
2. If this is dead bearing sound it also could be the half shaft bearing, had to change one as well.

My local Volvo dealer diagnosed bearings quite good (seems like the only thing they could do right), I assume they have some special device.

Buying Volvo original hub, if needed in the end, is quite expensive. Buying the assembly made by reputable company (ex. SKF of FAG) is a bit cheaper and should be a reasonably long term solution.

Ah, I see, that all makes sense now.
Not too expensive or difficult a DIY job, only issue is getting the bearing unit out and back in. Seems quote for £300 mainly consists of labour costs (as usual).
Dilema is one person says wheel bearing, other says differential/gearbox. Big difference in cost/viability.
Half shaft bearing is a good point too.
Many many thanks to all.
