Different Amazon Front Suspension Brackets
the plates that sit on the lower wishbone and reinforce it where the 4 bolts for the lower balljoint and the bump stop seem to come in different sizes in terms of height rather than shape . I have some that are much lower by maybe 1/2 inch to others so effectively the bump stop either sits higher or lower , Does anyone know why there were different dimensions used and is it that important ?
Thank you |

Wild guesses:-
A difference between PV and Amazon parts? A difference between normal models and a sportier one? ######## The first step is to try and identify via part numbers stamped on the parts - is there anything?

There is only one part number for the bump stop plate #653330. This for B18 and B20 Amazons. The only difference in that area is with the shock retainer plates. The early ones had a tab which slips over the top of the A-arm and the later ones which are held in place by the bolt. With the early type if the shock rod broke it would drop out along with the plate but the change mostly helps when fitting the rubbers and nut.

Never noticed any variation in height. Provided same both sides I can not imagine there being any issue

Unless the bolt(s) tear out or loosen and fall out I don't think a broken shock can drop out with either setup. I found little difference in effort replacing shocks; agree late style slightly easier to afix without prying. I do also think the later style is better; can you think why else would Volvo do it?

Agreed. Early ones used the tab plus one bolt and the later ones lost the tab and used two bolts.

mounts
gents i wasn't talking about the anti roll bar bracketry but the triangulated section that holds the bump stop rubber and has 4 bolt holes that locate with the lower wishbone and the lower ball joint . some of mine seem at least 1/2 inch higher than others ,there are definitely two types of fabrication . sorry for some reason i can't download any photos ..

Forum;
Referring to Item Nos on this exploded assembly diagram of lower A-Arm will help (source GCP.com site, for B20 Amazon). ...I recall lower damper mount (Item 36) on my '66 (so before B20s were fitted) has two securing bolts, and only one is shown here, but that is of course a different part from Item 13, which R122 is referring to... Bolt #37 is listed as 4 off in the parts book so 2 per plate.
The bump stop plate is #13 and as my previous post says is the same number for B18 and B20 Amazons, probably 1800 as well. Part #653330. It is mainly a strengthening plate for the lower ball joint/A arm attachment area but doubles up as a bump stop plate. |
