Default Engine rattles like on old tractor!!

My engine had developed a pulsing rattle on the top of the engine.
I have traced this problem to the VVT pulley which I have changed.
I am concerned about the timing (Inlet cam). I notice that the new pulley has no timing mark on it and that it has no splined connection to the camshaft. (I locked the camshafts while working on the engine).
The pulley appears to be held by friction only. Is this right or are I missing something.
Is there a way of checking the timing.

If anybody can help or advice, please let me know, Thanks.

Yes this is correct.

The only way now is to use Volvo special tool which is installed at the other end of the cams which locks them together at TDC, you can then mark the pulley.

Paul.

Thanks Paul,
Yes, the timing was out. I used a home made cam lock to the design as suggested in the Haynes manual. Unfortunatly, I made it of aluminium and this was not strong enough. It twisted when torquing the pulley.
This was proved when I started the engine which was a little rough.

To check and fix the timing, I made up a second jig - a lever to lock into the cam (lhs) with a turnbuckle attached, the other end of the turnbuckle being fixed.
I was the able to release the VVT pulley, rotate the cam and retighten the pulley.
It is running OK now.

Thanks again for your help.
