In the olde days a car maker such as Volvo might well have been able to persuade some component manufacturers to supply some upgraded products. Volvo had the volume and could pay a higher price by selling at a higher price.
Nowadays as we know, some Volvo spare parts are not as good as they used to be. Possibly for example water pumps, exhaust pipes....

yes i am sure they are just like everybody else , it would cost nearly £100,000 to make a 960 these days , no one would buy them then of course. body quality and standards now are quite amazing now though and the car is laden with electronics , things are a bit different .
