S40 Front Ball Joints
Been told I have slight play in my front lower ball joint, Has anyone replaced theirs before? Is it something you can do on your drive or recomend getting a garage to do it?
Also did you use gen volvo parts or is there something else out there on the shelf that you would recommend?

Just been given a quote of the part alone from volvo and its £115.20 just for one! Is this normal or are they taking the urine!?

If you don't mind non Volvo parts get a few quotes from Euro Car Parts, be aware they do cheap pressed steel types and the heavier (better) cast/ machined Lower Wishbones - Not difficult to fit but a Ball Joint splitter and axle stand(s) are a must for the tool box if you are considering DIY - Mike

I beleive that you can now get just the ball joints from a motor factors.
As before ball joint splitter and axles stands a must, and good drill bits and very careful drilling to remove the rivits Mark |

It's not enough to be told, surely you felt it too? such play both alters feedback through the front wheels and causes knocking noises on uneven roads.
If that ball joint really does need replacing then you can get a pair of LEMFÖRDER ball joints for a cheaper price, and the quality is far superior to OE ones. Or go for Febi Bilstein ... cheaper but less durable. Best choice would be Meyle HD but, unfortunately, they don't produce them separately, only as part of the whole control arm.

Ball joint splitter, what ever happened to the old two hammer method I dont mind going for cheaper aftermarket parts but not keen on Euro car parts as have seen and heard bad things about the parts they sell? I will try APD or GMF tomorrow....
