C30 General : Wheel bearings,

Hi,

I have a 2010 C30 driveE, at 35k it had both front wheel bearings replaced due to hummming noises but now at 40k the noise has returned, it sounds like an uneven humming that intensifies with speed. When the bearings were changed I had a chat with the mechanic and he said bearings were a common problem on all volvos sharing this platform, they bolt in fine but don't necessarily seat properly and there is no way to tell?!?

Does anyone have any ideas, I can't believe wheel bearings will fail this regularly.

volvo have been trying to resolve wheel bearing issues on their FWD cars for about 12 years now , various reasons why they go , but it certainly isnt general wear which makes their life sometimes unusualy short . Its not a big problem , but it makes you wonder who they have designing and producing them these days , and why after 12 years they still cant find a manufacturer to make a decent wheel bearing . Remember Volvo OWNED SKF in the early days !

Is it definately the bearing?
Reason I ask, the second to last Volvo that I bought (2000my V40) that had done 45k miles sounded like wheel bearings were gone on the rear. It turned out to be the tyres (think they were Pirelli) that were making the noise that sounded just like bearing whine. I replaced the tyres with different brand and never heard the noise again.

Does your car have the same brand of tyre fitted on all wheels. If they are different then it might be an idea to swap them from front to back and listen if the noise has gone or moved to the rear.

Thanks, they are all Michelin energy savers. Original rears now on front and new ones on rear, it did coincide with the change round of tyres but dismissed it as they all same.
