One can play with words- could, should, might.. - but the fact is- they WILL refuse a warranty claim on such a vehicle. I personally know of cases where warranty was denied over something completely benign and unrelated to the broken part in question. Car mfgs are not goodwill foundations- their sole purpose is profit.
No. Should and Must are legally defined. The EU got involved and ruled on this a few years back. They saw franchised car servicing as a cozy cartel and sought to break it up. Hence why your warranty is no longer dependant on using a franchised dealer, but it is dependant on using genuine parts and the approved intervals and service schedule. That said I do believe using a secondhand but original part is a grey area and I would be interested to see any case law on this.

@Haldex, as per previous posts that is the point We are making, Volvo in the UK have to honour a warranty issue even if it has been serviced by a NON Volvo garage, as long as it is serviced to the Volvo Schedule and using Volvo Approved parts.

I had no issues with an Audi Warranty replacement engine, but service book was stamped by an independent Audi garage, infact same can be said for Mercedes, I have that serviced by a Mercedes independent and warranty work was carried out after.

Ok, I’m not gonna argue with you guys.

I say bon chance & lawyer up - and bring a copy of that UK law- and you should be fine. Or you must be fine?

Default Many thanks to all posters

Thanks to all you boys and girls for a sometimes lively debate on this issue.

Next time the dear gets it and I might just stick with a good old paper map.

I have written directly to Volvo's CEO in Sweden asking for mitigation of the cost - I'll keep you informed of any response.

Sadly I don't look upon my new Volvo in the driveway with admiring eyes any more, more the scornful look you'd have for a parent who has just cut you out of their will and left it all to the local cats charity.

C'est la vie...
