Long-term, I suspect that lubricating it will fix the problem. I was recently told off for advising someone to use WD40 for lubricating locks - you need to use a solvent/graphite type lube for locks, else it just attracts dirty by being sticky!

Just an update, I tried all the things listed, and nothing, and weeks later, turned off the ignition, and heh presto, the lock worked.

Unfortunately, it would not work again, lubricated it again with some more WD40, and it would work intermittently.

I have found that by taking off the plastic cover just below the ign. switch/ steering lock, and tapping the lock with something, the lock will jump into place.

I bought some silicone spray lubricant and some spray grease. Today I first sprayed the silicone in the key aperture, and the lock worked a little more frequently, then I followed with some of spray grease. So far, since then, the lock works every time.

Thanks Foggyjames and everyone else.
