Default 'Clunk' When Reaching About 10mph After Initial Start-Up

Hi All.

I've hunted a few times for this but struggle to find the right wording, so apologies if it's been covered a guzillion times!

As the title says, when reaching about 10mph from initial start-up a rather pronounced 'clunk' is heard ('08 S40 2.0 Petrol R-Design). It's only that once when you first start and not for the rest of the journey. I'd assumed it was the auto door lock switch kicking in (although I've never felt the need to engage this so far), and thought that maybe an actuator or something still cuts in despite not actually having it set to lock. Would I be right in this assumption?

Any probable explanations appreciated!

Thanks! Can't argue with that! Why the clunking though, would assume (obviously wrongly!) that 'ABS selfcheck' would be a quiet electrical-type thing?

volvo prefer to do a proper moving check i mean it is all right some sensor saying it is but what if the sensor is rubbish like on some cars plus it clearly will keep it at it's optimum setting.

Never actually had the ABS kick in on me in the volvo actually...or not that i know of and now and again i have stamped on them.

An electrical impulse causes a mechanical snap at the calipers.

The electric pump runs to check it is ready for action on that journey .

I have got the same problem. So took it to the Volvo garage, also added few other things to do i.e air con top up as i have this car only couple of months. So they had it all day, and the end result was "sir we dont know what is it" so they have booked me in with a "master tech" thats how they call him the man who specialises only on Volvo. That just made me laugh, but anyway i am gonna give them a chance. Not paying a penny anyway.

Thanks for all the replies, absolutely nothing to do with the door locking system then! You've finally satisfied my need for a proper explanation. Right, next question...
