looks like you inherited someone elses problem !
If the engine is cranking over with the key, in the normal manner the starter will be ok . Have a look at the two fuses behind the battery , one for fuel pump the other for fog lights .... then see if your spark is constant then check fuel pressure ... It sounds like it is starting from the cold start injector but the main injectors are not injecting .

Which could even just be blocked injectors. Also the first thing that sprung to my mind was its not getting instant power source. check and clean dizzy and re check the coil is wired in correct and that its not broken down.

Thanks guys have check some more things.
Sorry when i said starter coil, i was talking about the ignition coil. Car starts and runs fine if you hold the key on... Release the key and it stops.. ??? Sure sounds to me to be like a wire switching prob... |

Yea ignition switch i think. not too sure though not had it happen to me before. even if it did I'm the kind that would wire up a start switch instead.

lets get this straight.
so, when you turn key to 'start' position, the engine fires up and runs ok? (but your starter motor must still be engaged? which is not good, you will damage starter motor) and when you release the key to the 'on' position the engine cuts out/turns off. yes? possibly losing ignition live from switch to ignition coil. quickest check to do is put ignition on and see if you have 12v at the coil on the low tension wire. or, if you dont have a multimeter or test light, you could put a tempory live to positive side of coil (lenght of wire held onto battery + and onto coil +) then get someone to crank it to see if it cures fault.(keeps running when key released.) if so then you need to bypass ignition switch to see if the switch is faulty. which it sounds like it is. other than that, without seeing the car in person to diagnose it, it may be fuel pressure related, possibly pump is priming so enough pressure to start but pump not producing enough pressure to run engine? or loosing live feed to pump/relay when key released? let us know how you get on and if you need any more advice |

oh and the coil should be marked 'positive' and 'negative' on the low tension wires, make sure you have them the right way around. (spade terminal ones are different sizes i believe but the threaded terminal ones can be mixed up)

neg wire has either Dropped off or has corrosion on it where it exits the Dizzy ... its getting a "Circuit" when cranking (Thru the starter motor) assoon as the Starter dis engages it loses the Neg feed from the Dizzy & the engine Dies ,, SERIOUSLY A 10 SECOND FIX!!! check the Neg wire on the Dizzy it should come out thru the side & connect (thru the Wiring Harness) to the chassis .. BET IT DOESN'T ... To confirm ... where it connects to the dizzy Base plate connect another wire & run it to the Chassis ... She'll fire up NO PROBS then !!! Keith
